The west pediment of the Parthenon monument

On the west pediment, the quarrel between Athena and Poseidon is depicted, each vying to become the patron deity of Athens. The two gods offered their gifts to win the city's favor. With a single strike of his trident, Poseidon created a spring (or a lake) of salty water on the Acropolis. In contrast, Athena struck the ground with her spear, causing the first olive tree to grow on the Acropolis. As a result, Athena was chosen as the city's patron deity. This story is first recounted by Herodotus.
