#HackTheCamp is the inspirational Hackathon on refugees and their integration challenges. It is organized by the Impact Hub Athens, the Οnassis Cultural Center and the U.S. Embassy.
The #HackTheCamp hackathon is a sprint-like design event wherein people with different disciplines are involved in producing sustainable solutions for refugees. However, in this case, we are talking about something different. We are talking about a creative marathon with a humanitarian purpose! Refugees face daily problems and they want a practical solution as their lives are in the air. I love Twitter! Yes, I love it because it was the tool that gave me the opportunity to participate in this event.
I was informed of the #HackTheCamp Hackathon through this medium. Unfortunately, I miss the first day of this event because I didn’t know it. Friday night I came back to my place I checked my Twitter and #HackTheCamp appeared on my screen, I remember the day it was Friday 21 October. In the beginning, I felt a bit foolish because I have missed its first day. Nevertheless, I read that the “Meet the Hackers” event would be continuing on the next day: Saturday 22 October. I was excited about this idea so I went on its second day.
Saturday morning and I am at the “Meet the Hackers” event, at Diplarios School. A place full of nice people, that are willing to help refugees. People with different backgrounds: developers, designers, people in social entrepreneurship, humanitarian workers, educators, artists, and other stakeholders, professionals or not worked in groups and sought sustainable solutions for the refugees. Brainstorming was useful and practical.
I could write much more about this event but I would like to grab the opportunity and talk about my idea RefWay application. 🙂 As I have the honor to be one of the 10 finalists and pass on to the next phase of the #HackTheCamp
With many refugees in Greece, a job search mobile application is only a small way to help refugees to find a proper job. Many of them are very skilled people, who just want to make a new start in a welcoming place. Nobody can feel free without his/her independence and security. Undoubtedly a job can start your life again. Many refugees have limited technology materials apart from their smartphones, as most of their valuables are left behind. So that is why I strongly believe that a smartphone application is totally addressed to their needs. Refugees stay connected to their job search while on the go. Search, view, and apply to jobs. Key features of RefWay App will be: – Refugees will be able to search, view, and apply for jobs. – They could create a RefWay profile and store resumes, job applications, and job lists. – Save job posts to apply later / or email them to a friend / or share job posts through social media. – Keep up to date with the status of your applications. – See jobs similar to those you applied for. – Technical and not only support through the embedded contact form. May I ask you a favor? 🙂 Please check my first, premature, prototype, and how the RefWay application would look in terms of layout, and features. check the below link & “run” RefWay Application. Your comments and suggestions would be valuable. Thank you very much for your attention.
